Tonido is an online cloud storage provider that can run on many devices. While the desktop server Pro and Biz versions can be run as a Windows service within Tonido, the free version cannot. However, Tonido can be run as a Windows service using FireDaemon Pro, which allows you to have the application start automatically at boot prior to login, start multiple instances of the application and more. This HOWTO will show you how to set it up. You can also use FireDaemon Fusion to manage FireDaemon and other Windows services via a web browser.

Tonido Server Setup Under FireDaemon Pro

Download the latest version of Tonido from the official Tonido website. Be sure to select Tonido Server for the purposes of this HOWTO.

Run the Tonido Server installer. By default Tonido installs to C:\Users\USERNAME\Appdata\Roaming\Tonido so for the purposes of this HOWTO, we will use that directory.

Tonido Server assigns servers a URL based on their username. For the purposes of this HOWTO, the URL is http ://firedaemon.tonidoid.com. Run Tonido Server by accessing your TonidoID URL after installing it to configure your preferences. Also make sure to disable Tonido Server from starting up with Windows. Right-click the Tonido icon in the task bar and uncheck "Run at Windows Startup". Uncheck "Open Browser on Launch" to avoid Tonido accidentally running in your browser. You should also make sure to shut down your existing instance of Tonido by selecting Shutdown from the Tonido icon.

Download and install FireDaemon Pro into the directory of your choice, typically C:\Program Files\FireDaemon.

Next start the FireDaemon GUI from the desktop shortcut. Click on the "Create a new service definition" button in the toolbar (or type Ctrl+N) and enter the information into the fields as you see below. Adjust the paths to suit your installation. Note the required parameters.

  • Executable: The path to the tonido.exe file. The default is C:\Users\USERNAME\Appdata\Roaming\Tonido\tonido.exe
  • Working Directory: The directory containing the tonido.exe file. The default is C:\Users\USERNAME\Appdata\Roaming\Tonido
  • Parameters: None. Leave this field blank.

Now click on the Settings tab. If you DON'T want to see Tonido Server running, uncheck the Interact with Desktop check box & select “Hidden” from the “Show Window” dropdown. You may run Tonido as the user you installed it as. In the Logon Account field type your username (e.g. Administrator) and then enter the user's password twice in the Password and Confirm fields. You can change the Process Priority to allocate more CPU time to Tonido or specify which CPU or core Tonido will run on (in the case of multi-processor, hyperthreaded or multi-core CPUs).

Now click OK to finish setup and start your Tonido Server!

Note: When you switch to Session 0 for the first time after running Tonido Server, you will be prompted to choose a browser to run Tonido in. Select your preferred browser and be sure to select Always use this browser so you won't be prompted again.
