TinCam is a tool that makes it easy to create a webpage with live pictures or video from your webcam. TinCam can upload pictures to your webserver, or serve them directly from your own computer. The application can be run as a Windows Service using FireDaemon Pro, which lets you start the application automatically at boot prior to login, start multiple instances of the application and more. This HOWTO will show you how to set it up. You can also use Fusion to manage FireDaemon and other Windows services via a web browser.

Setting Up TinCam

Download the current version of TinCam from the official website.

Install TinCam. By default, TinCam installs to C:\Program Files\TinCam. For this HOWTO we will use this default installation path.

After TinCam is installed, open up TinCam and create your new profile. Click on Setup and then Setup Wizard, then click next to begin setting up your new profile.

On the Select Video Devices window, select your camera or your capture device, and then click next.

If you are updating your webcam pictures by motion detection or on a timer you can make that selection here. For this example we will use a timer to take a snapshot every x seconds. Click next after making your selection.

TinCam uses the FTP protocol to transfer your updated images to an FTP server. You will need an FTP account if you have a web hosting account or if you have your own server. FTP is beyond the scope of this tutorial, but there are many available resources online to help you get started.

Enter your FTP Server address, username, password and upload directory. Once entered in, click the test settings. Once the test passes click next.

If you already have your own webpage then select I will create a webpage myself. If you don't have your own webpage, TinCam can create a page for you. For this HOWTO we will let TinCam create a page for us. Click next and enter the name of the file for the webpage.

Whether you choose to create a webpage yourself or let TinCam create a page for you, enter your preferred settings when prompted. When setup is complete, do not check start capture. Click Finish to complete the new profile setup.

TinCam Setup Under FireDaemon Pro

Download and install FireDaemon Pro into the directory of your choice, typically C:\Program Files\FireDaemon.

Next start the FireDaemon GUI from the desktop shortcut. Click on the "Create a new service definition" button in the toolbar (or type Ctrl+N) and enter the information into the fields as you see below. Adjust the paths to suit your installation. Note the required parameters.

Executable: The path to your TinCam.exe file. For the purposes of this HOWTO, the path is C:\Program Files\TinCam\TinCam.exe.

Working Directory: The directory containing your TinCam.exe file. For the purposes of this HOWTO, the path is C:\Program Files\TinCam.

The most important field on the tab is the Parameters. The Parameters define the initial setup of your server. Here’s the full parameter list you should have:

-p customProfile -a
  • -p customProfile  loads a custom profile. Replace customProfile with your profile's name.
  • -a begins autocapture automatically when TinCam is started. This parameter is optional.

Click the Settings Tab. Set the username and password of the Windows user running TinCam (if password is set).
