MetaTrader4 is a free-of-charge application specially designed for Forex trading, allowing Forex traders to analyse quotes, make trades and develop strategies. The application can be run as a Windows Service using FireDaemon Pro, which lets you start the application automatically at boot prior to login, start multiple instances of the application and more. This HOWTO will show you how to set it up. You can also use Fusion to manage FireDaemon and other Windows services via a web browser.

MetaTrader4 Setup Under FireDaemon Pro

Download MetaTrader4 from the MetaTrader website.

By default MetaTrader4 installs to C:\Program Files\MetaTrader Alpari UK so for the purposes of this HOWTO, we will use this directory.

Download and install FireDaemon Pro into the directory of your choice, typically C:\Program Files\FireDaemon.

Next start the FireDaemon GUI from the desktop shortcut. Click on the "Create a new service definition" button in the toolbar (or type Ctrl+N) and enter the information into the fields as you see below. Adjust the paths to suit your installation. Note that no parameters are required. If you installed MetaTrader4 outside of the default installation path then enter that path in the Executable and Working Directory fields.

  • Executable: The path to the terminal.exe file. The default path is C:\Program Files (x86)\MetaTrader4\terminal.exe.
  • Working Directory: The directory containing the terminal.exe file. The default path is C:\Program Files (x86)\MetaTrader4.
  • Parameters: None. Leave this field blank.

Now click on the Settings tab. Make sure "Interact with Desktop" is checked. You must run MetaTrader as the user you installed it as. In the Logon Account field type your username (e.g. Administrator) and then enter the user's password twice in the Password and Confirm fields. You can change the Process Priority to allocate more CPU time to MetaTrader or specify which CPU or core MetaTrader will run on (in the case of multi-processor, hyperthreaded or multi-core CPUs).

Click OK to finish setup and start MetaTrader! You can check the status by looking at the Status column in the FireDaemon window.

Note: You may need to enter your MetaTrader username and password when switching to Session 0. You need to do this only once.
